When a person is repeatedly given something for nothing, with no expenditure of time, effort or energy, they ultimately feel entitled to that thing. It is often a subtle, grinding change into that arrogant entitlement mentality. That thing that they were so freely given out of good will becomes a trait and a right to their way of thinking and can impact the way they conduct themselves with everything that they do. Why work hard for something, just demand it. Give half hearted effort and expect full hearted compensation. This is how politicians gain support for their platforms, by promising something for nothing. The tragedy for those on the receiving end is that they become slaves to a system that cannot possibly maintain their expected level of charity.
We call this a welfare state and it is the state of our lives today whether we want to admit it or not. Think about this while our Federal Government is trying to enact the largest social welfare policy program ever constructed under the guise of “healthcare reform”.
Say goodbye to innovations in the medical field, there will no longer be any incentive to discover the cure to disease or illness, only the need for gifted physicians to see more patients to maintain the standard of living they have worked for and grown accustomed to.
The Roman Emperor Commodus gave bread to the masses, bread made from their own labor. Barack Obama wants to give us healthcare reform, paid for with the innumerable taxes on the American people. A government of any kind has no wealth other than that which it can steal from the very people that support it.
And the welfare state rolls on.
